TED: Rethinking Geopolitics

In this talk, Amory Lovins does an excellent job of explaining the process of "Winning the Oil Endgame." He explains a practical way for the US to wean itself off of foreign oil over a number of years. The appeal of this approach lies in the idea that we can innovate while remaining economically effective. Essentially, it is cheaper to be efficient and save fuel rather than by trying to get the fuel cheaply; thus, businesses can remove oil from the equation while still making a profit and staying competitive.

With oil prices the way that they are, we need more people thinking like this. Stick around to the end; what he has to say in the last few minutes is particularly good.

In the previous talk, the focus was on what we can do in the US to change the geopolitics of oil. Here, the international expert on security strategy, Thomas P.M. Barnett, explains a radical new plan for the armed forces which would dramatically change the way in which the US addresses security concerns and foreign relations. The plan centers around the idea of splitting the armed forces into a two-tiered system where one tier is focused solely on winning battles, but the other is focused on promoting international peace, state building, and diplomacy.

Brilliant. This man proves there are still genius strategists out there and that the people who shouldn't be are completely ignoring them.
